Lubricants play a crucial role in oil and gas drilling operations by reducing friction, torque, and drag, thereby extending the life of drilling equipment and enhancing operational efficiency. Two notable lubricants in this field are I-Lube 300® and Strata-Lube®, both offering significant benefits for various drilling applications.
I-Lube 300® is a specialty lubricant designed specifically for drilling applications. It is highly effective in reducing torque and drag exerted on the drill string, which is essential for extending the life of the drill bit. By providing excellent torque and drag reduction, I-Lube 300® helps minimise casing and bit wear and reduces bit balling. Its performance has been validated by passing the strenuous cheese and grease test, making it a reliable choice for challenging drilling environments.
This lubricant functions as a pipe-on-pipe and open hole friction reducing agent, which is particularly important in the rapid drilling of horizontal wells. The reduction of torque and drag is vital for maintaining the integrity of the drill string and ensuring efficient drilling operations. I-Lube 300® is also highly effective for coil tubing applications, further showcasing its versatility and effectiveness in the field.
Strata-Lube® is a specialty liquid friction reducer that has proven to be highly effective in extreme operating environments. This HTHP (High-Temperature High-Pressure) friction reducer is a non-toxic, non-flammable blend of two fatty acids, making it compatible with all drilling fluids. Strata-Lube® can tolerate temperatures up to 350°F and is particularly effective at increasing the rate of penetration (ROP), especially while sliding.
Strata-Lube® works in conjunction with Strata Kleen to increase ROP and decrease torque and drag. It continuously coats the bottom hole assembly (BHA) and all types of bits, keeping metal and synthetic cutters clean. This prevents premature bit failure and enhances drilling ROPs with both rock bits and polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bits. Unlike other friction reducers, Strata-Lube® does not break down into tar balls or cause excessive foaming, maintaining its effectiveness even under high temperatures or elevated pH conditions.
The use of lubricants like I-Lube 300® and Strata-Lube® in oil and gas drilling offers numerous benefits, including reduced torque and drag, extended drill bit life, and increased ROP. These lubricants protect drilling equipment against damage caused by friction, torque, and high pressures encountered in complex reservoirs.
I-Lube 300® and Strata-Lube® represent significant advancements in lubricant technology for oil and gas drilling. Their unique properties and proven effectiveness make them invaluable assets in enhancing drilling efficiency and protecting equipment in challenging environments.

Despite numerous cleanings, the productivity of the Reverse Osmosis plant would not recover from severe membrane fouling. The membrane autopsy revealed that the ferric hydroxide was seeding
silica polymerization and that even while the ferric hydroxide was removed, the silica scaling was continuing to grow.
The plant was experiencing weekly shutdowns for fiber clean up (~ 3 kg bags of matted slurry is cleaned per week). The shut downs were costly as they reduce plant availability for production.
