A S Harrison & Co is excited to announce its participation in the annual Freshwater Sciences Society conference, taking place from 19-22 November 2024 in Aotearoa, New Zealand. This year’s theme, Haere i mua whakakotahi – Moving forward as one, highlights the urgency of addressing the challenges facing freshwater ecosystems in an increasingly changing world.
Attendees are invited to visit our booth and meet Lex, our New Zealand Market Manager, to explore cutting-edge water treatment technologies. One of the key topics being discussed, algae and harmful blooms, is a crucial focus area for A S Harrison & Co. Lex will be showcasing Diatomix™, an innovative solution that naturally mitigates algal blooms and fish kills by redirecting nutrients back into the food chain in a sustainable manner.
Diatomix™ is a concentrated liquid with nano-sized silica flocs (100 to 900 nm) containing micronutrients essential for diatom algae growth. This nutrient boost enables diatoms to out-compete other algae for nitrogen and phosphorus in water bodies.
Algae blooms can be costly, affecting wastewater treatment ponds and tailings storage facilities. Diatoms, found in freshwater and seawater, thrive when fed Diatomix, replicating up to three times faster than problem algae and weeds.
By absorbing nitrogen and phosphorus, diatoms starve out unwanted algae, restoring a healthy water balance and allowing beneficial algae to flourish.
Diatomix can be used in various water bodies, including aquaculture ponds, lakes, rivers, and sewage treatment plants. It effectively removes nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), increases dissolved oxygen, and reduces harmful bacteria and algal blooms. This product improves fish catches, keeps aquaculture ponds clean and oxygenated, and provides natural live feed for fish.
In addition to Diatomix™, A S Harrison & Co offers a comprehensive range of water treatment solutions for agricultural, aquaculture, municipal, industrial, and residential sectors. Our commitment to quality and environmental sustainability makes us a trusted partner in delivering tailored solutions for all water treatment needs.

CHALLENGE A power plant relying on ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) faced a critical operational challenge. A wastewater treatment upset severely fouled the UF system, drastically reducing water production. Despite multiple cleaning attempts with sodium hypochlorite and citric acid, transmembrane pressure (TMP) remained high, and flux showed no improvement. The plant’s inability to meet […]
CHALLENGE A gold processing plant in New Zealand sought to improve gold recovery efficiency while addressing high Total Organic Carbon (TOC) levels. Elevated TOC increased the Preg-Robbing Factor (PRF), reducing the plant’s ability to efficiently recover gold during the Carbon-In-Leach (CIL) process. The traditional use of kerosene as a carbon blanking agent offered limited efficacy, […]
CHALLENGE A municipal water reuse plant processing 8 million gallons per day (MGD) experienced severe fouling and scaling issues, including calcium phosphate and silica deposits. With steep feed pressure increases and differential pressures in both stages, the plant required frequent cleanings every 4 to 6 weeks, amounting to 32 cleanings annually. Each cleaning cycle resulted […]
