VEEGUM® Efficacy Trial

VEEGUM® Efficacy Trial

Report Produced by Sangeeta Patel, Technical Manager at A S Harrison & Co

Background

VEEGUM® R is the original, economical and most widely used grade of VEEGUM®. These products are water-washed smectite clays that serve as suspension stabilisers, emulsion optimisers and rheology modifiers. This also reduces the slippery or sticky feel of gums and polymers, while providing a silky, tack-free feel in topical preparations.

Experiment Design

This study was designed to test the foamability, adhesion & fragrance retention capacity of the formulation with and without the addition of VEEGUM® R.

 Formulation Development

  1. Heat water in main vessel to 75°C
  2. Start air stirring water (800 RPM) then add VEEGUM® R slowly into water
  3. Keep stirring and hydrate for 45 min
  4. Add Empicol® LZ/N set mixing speed to low until homogenous and turn off heat
  5. Add fragrance and mix until homogenous

Observations

Foam Ability & Bubble Size

The foaming test was conducted and compared against each other as shown below. The formulation containing VEEGUM® R had small compact bubbles with high volume.

Also, the foam was quite stable overtime for almost 20 mins as seen here.

Whereas the one without VEEGUM® R had large loose bubbles and the foam collapsed relatively quickly.

The developed formulations were then sprayed on a vertical wall to check its adhesion for cleaning purposes.

The formulation with VEEGUM® R had better adhesion property than the formulation without the VEEGUM® R.

Fragrance Delivery

A sensory panel evaluation was conducted with 5 panelists to compare the fragrance1 intensity overtime for both the developed formulations.

Each formulation was placed at room temperature (~25oC) and accelerated stability in an incubator at a temperature of 45oC for 4 weeks. Below are the results from the panel evaluation.

  1. Fragrance was measured at an intensity of 1-10 with 1-being poor & 10-being strong.

Conclusion

Two surfactant systems were developed with one formulation containing VEEGUM® R and the other formulation without it. Adding VEEGUM® R to the formulation didn’t return a clear formulation. However, the vertical adhesion & fragrance intensity was better. Also, the foam was stable with tight bubbles compared to the formulation without the VEEGUM® R.
