Volunteering – Why we Do It. Debbie’s Story

Debbie Velez is our Market Manager for Food here at A S Harrison & Co. And, aside from being a superb coworker and lovely individual, she is a Make-A-Wish volunteer and more importantly, a mum.

At A S Harrison & Co we support staff with volunteering by contributing with one paid-day a year to volunteer for the organisation of their choice. Most take the opportunity to give back to the community, and each have their reasons for doing so.

In Debbie’s case, the Make-A-Wish Foundation holds a very special place in her heart as the organisation supported her family during a very difficult time in their lives.

You see, in 2010 her daughter Leticia, then 6 years of age, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and ended on life support during a particularly difficult part of her treatment.

Leticia’s wish was to make snow angels. Make-A-Wish delivered by sending the family to Thredbo, so that they could make snow angels together as a family when Leticia was well enough.

Today, Leticia is a beautiful young lady with some residual challenges resulting from the diagnosis and subsequent treatment, but with a keen passion for animals and a desire to pursue studies in Marine Biology.

Debbie’s story is the story of one of our own. There are many stories throughout our communities such as Debbie and her daughter’s.

Volunteering is an important factor that contributes to well-needed support in our communities, a support that we may need as individuals at some point in our lives.
