Located in the historic outback gold mining metropolis of Kalgoorlie-Boulder in Western Australia’s infamous Golden Mile, Curtin University’s Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) provided the perfect spot to host A S Harrison & Co’s inaugural “Mining Summit & Workshop”. WASM is also very close to the heart of our WA based National Account Manager, Shaun Holmes. He graduated from Curtin University & Western Australia School of Mines as a chemist and a metallurgist in 2015.
The program comprised both classroom and laboratory workshops presented by Innospec and A S Harrison & Co. It was aimed at educating those involved in the minerals processing industry on the newest generation of mineral processing chemicals offered by Innospec and A S Harrison & Co. The networking event afterwards was attended by key stakeholders from several local mining companies.
The packed three-day summit was presented by Innospec’s Nobuzwe Makhotla and A S Harrison & Co’s Shaun Holmes. Nobuzwe is Innospec Performance Chemical’s mining products Technical Lead, from Johannesburg. She is a former Gold Fields’ South Africa Metallurgist with over 20 years of experience.
The summit was attended by Innospec’s Dylan Chan (Sales Manager – Asia Pacific), David Cromley (Business Director – Americas) and our own Mining team including Phil Fleming, Thomas Pope and Daniele Strongone.
The event was well received by the university staff, students and other industry stakeholders. Whilst in Western Australia, Shaun showed off some of the natural and cultural delights of his home state including Kings Park, Fremantle Prison, the KCGM Superpit and the outback’s starlit night sky.

Despite numerous cleanings, the productivity of the Reverse Osmosis plant would not recover from severe membrane fouling. The membrane autopsy revealed that the ferric hydroxide was seeding
silica polymerization and that even while the ferric hydroxide was removed, the silica scaling was continuing to grow.
The plant was experiencing weekly shutdowns for fiber clean up (~ 3 kg bags of matted slurry is cleaned per week). The shut downs were costly as they reduce plant availability for production.
